Pediatricians have a special bond with their patients.
For Dr. Beth Garrett, every patient, from newborn babies to high school seniors, is an opportunity to have a positive impact on a young life.
“I love getting to see my patients be vibrant and succeed,” she said. “I feel like all of my patients are in some way, shape or form my kids, like I have a big extended family.”
Dr. Garrett starts each day visiting newborns in the nursery, meeting new parents and giving them support, and helping new moms with breastfeeding. She then visits patients in the pediatrics unit of the hospital. In clinic, Dr. Garrett works with children of all ages for checkups, vaccinations, illnesses, physicals and more.
“Every day is different, and there is so much to enjoy,” she said. “I love seeing the little babies grow and develop. I’ve gotten to see children grow up, and I get to hear about their victories at school. It warms my heart.”
Becoming a pediatrician was a natural choice for Dr. Garrett. Throughout high school and college, she had many jobs working with children including being a bible school teacher and swimming instructor.
“I really loved working with kids, and when I got into rotations my third year of medical school, I really enjoyed my pediatrics rotation,” she said. “I just knew pediatrics was where God was calling me to be.”
Dr. Garrett graduated from Missouri Southern State College (now University) in 2002, then attended medical school at the University of Missouri. After graduating in 2006, she did a pediatrics residency there, which she completed in 2009.
She joined the team at Freeman Children’s Clinic in August 2009.
In her free time, Dr. Garrett enjoys spending time with her husband and their dogs. She is a Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church of Oronogo.
