David Helms, CP, Oklahoma Licensed Certified Prosthetisteet the couple who owns Grand Prosthetics & Orthotics LightWeight Artificial Limbs & Braces in Grove, Oklahoma. David and Beverly Helms’ compassionate care and exceptional service have helped over a thousand amputees get their independence back.
Over the course of his illustrious career, Prosthetist David Helms has helped amputees stand on their own two feet again – literally!
“Many bilateral amputees who thought they had no hope to ever walk have rolled in and walked out,” he said. “It is amazing to hear their stories of achieving pre-amputation aspirations, doing everything from working and driving to farming, fishing, golfing, flying and so much more.”
Helms said the key to the success of his clients is the undivided attention he gives to each amputee. He focuses on only one client at a time with care and detail given to socket fit, matching the feet to the activity of the client and maximizing alignment.
It would appear prosthetics is Helms’ lifelong calling, but he began his career serving our country in the Air Force. While working in Anchorage, Alaska, as an airframe repair specialist, he simply made a complicated angle change on a brace to the orthotist’s amazement. He then began his orthotist and prosthetist education, studying at NYU, UCLA and Northwestern University in Chicago where Beverly also eventually attended after their providential meeting two years earlier.
“I knew immediately that we would be the team we have proven to be for 37 years,” he said.
In his free time, he enjoys building and restoring anything with wheels with his sons and grandson. He volunteers with Rotary and as a Grove City Councilman 2003-2007.
